Mother’s Mother: When Grandma Fell Over
Plot
A man quits his job to care for his dying grandmother, motivated by her wealth. He plans to win her favor before she passes.. This is actually the film debut of 78-year-old housewife Usa Semkhum, who plays grandmother Men Ju.. On the day of the gravesweeping, she told the doctor she had a stomach ache and found blood in her stool. So they did a bowel exam on her. The results came out this morning.
Grandma has cancer
It is in the final stage. The doctor said she had a year left.M: [playing a video game, not listening] Dead! Man, I told them to pray first. Damn it. The esteemed film critic Roger Ebert once declared that movies are powerful empathy-generating machines, a statement I wholeheartedly agree with, and there is no better demonstration of this phenomenon than How to Make Your Millions Before Grandma Dies. Emotional swings and roller coasters, what a ride it was!
You just need authenticity without artifice
Writer-director Pat Bonnitipat didn’t even try to reinvent the wheel. You know exactly what will happen at the end; no ultimate panacea (here’s looking at you, queen of tears), no "always darkest before the dawn" ends and there’s no final twist (there is a twist of sorts, but Cho whispered to me an hour before it dropped what the twist would be, and of course she was right. How does she do it every time?), but it’s a testament to great storytelling because you don’t need twists, flashy cinematography, full orchestration, a CGI dream sequence, or an entire series to deliver a wonderful experience. The film’s greatest asset is its relatability. If you’re born into an Asian family with ancestral roots that stretch far and wide, you’ll feel familiar with all the characters. Perhaps you will see manifestations of your relatives and family members here – the patient daughter, the son who feels that problems that can be solved with money are not problems, the calculating daughter-in-law, the good-for-nothing son and the child whose eyes are glued to the computer screen.
She is so natural without the slightest trickery
The story is fictional, but it feels real as the family dynamics are keenly observed as the death of the matriarch is imminent and the vultures begin to circle. Grandma isn’t stupid, she knows why she’s the center of attention, and even M isn’t spared when she tells him, “You sow the seed hoping to reap it too, don’t you?” to the actors who breathed life into their characters. I am surprised that this is Usha Seamkhum’s first role. Putthipong "Billkin" Assaratanakul is the perfect foil to Amaha’s no-nonsense approach to life. You will follow his circle avidly knowing that he will be smart in the way he lives and when that moment comes it is so subtle that you know it is the sum of Amah’s many interactions with him. Although the plot is simple, I doubt it.
everyone will find it boring
As you steam towards the inevitable end, it will happen – tears will flow, but know that every trickle will be deserved, as will every laugh. Incidentally, this is currently the highest grossing film in Thailand and Indonesia, which shows that it has resonated with many audiences. This is the rare film that Cho and I were still talking about over breakfast this morning, probably because we didn’t want the magic to dissipate as we desperately tried to cling to the strings of a heartfelt story. You’ll be surprised that we can still detect vignettes of truth after a good night’s sleep, such as a quick scene with a monk in a wheelchair in a chemo clinic, as if to suggest that the disease affects everyone, including the religiously devout, or the scene where Amah goes to see her estranged brother , to borrow money for a funeral plot.
